The Orient Express Train, LEGO got so much right and yet so much wrong. First of all, it was one of the best building experiences of the year for me. So many fun and clever building techniques, as well as nice details on the inside, impressed me from start to finish. I especially fell in love with the wheel sets, but the transitions between the carriages are also a good example of great design.
The carriages themselves are well-made, with a nice size for minifigures and a beautiful color scheme. The whole thing is also robustly constructed and easy to build, as you would expect from LEGO.
However, there are also many problems. The train is not modeled after the historic Orient Express, but rather seems like a promotional gift for the current luxury train of the Accor Hotel Group under that name. Many details on the inside seem copied from a company brochure, and the color of the locomotive can best be described as kitschy. In addition, there are some spelling errors in the prints, and for a train without a motor, it is definitely too expensive. The track bed seems too uninspired for a non-motorized display model.
All of this is really a shame because the carriages are the best I have ever built, and the locomotive could have been really nice in black. The set has too many flaws to be really good.
